What Is Write Essay?
You are given a prompt (a statement or question on a general topic) and must write an essay of 200–300 words within 20 minutes. The prompt usually requires you to argue a position, discuss multiple views, or evaluate advantages and disadvantages.
Scoring Criteria
- Content (up to 3 points) — relevance, development of ideas, supporting examples
- Form (up to 2 points) — 200–300 words; structured with introduction, body, conclusion
- Grammar Range & Accuracy (up to 2 points) — varied, correct sentence structures
- Vocabulary Range (up to 2 points) — precise, varied vocabulary; no repetition
- General Linguistic Range (up to 1 point) — overall language sophistication
- Spelling (up to 2 points) — consistent British or American spelling throughout
Essay Types
- Agree/Disagree: “Do you agree or disagree with the following statement?”
- Discussion: “Discuss both views and give your own opinion.”
- Advantages/Disadvantages: “What are the advantages and disadvantages of…?”
- Problem/Solution: “What are the causes of… and what can be done?”
Universal Essay Template (250 words)
Introduction (40 words): Paraphrase the prompt. State your position clearly.
“In recent years, [topic] has become a subject of significant debate. While some argue that [view A], I firmly believe that [your position].”
Body Paragraph 1 (70 words): Main argument + example + explanation.
“Firstly, [main point]. For instance, [specific example]. This demonstrates that [link back to thesis].”
Body Paragraph 2 (70 words): Second argument or counter-argument + rebuttal.
“Furthermore/However, [second point]. Although [counter-view], [reason why your view is stronger].”
Conclusion (40 words): Restate thesis + summarise key points.
“In conclusion, while [acknowledgement], [restate position] because [brief summary of reasons].”
Vocabulary Boosters
- Hedging: “It could be argued that…” / “Evidence suggests…”
- Contrast: “Despite this,” / “Nevertheless,” / “On the other hand,”
- Emphasis: “Crucially,” / “Above all,” / “Of particular significance is…”
