ONE TOPIC. A LITTLE MORE CONFIDENCE.

Read an Academic Passage

What Is Read an Academic Passage?

Read an academic text and answer questions about its content and meaning. You need to follow explanations, connect examples to claims and infer relationships using evidence from the passage.

Detail Study reference
Exam TOEFL iBT (2026 format)
Response Answer passage-based questions
Timing Reading section timer; follow the current module instructions
Primary skill Main ideas, references and supported inference

How It Is Scored

The answer must be supported by the text. Topic knowledge helps with vocabulary but does not replace passage evidence. Do not convert a cautious finding into a universal conclusion.

Technical Foundations

Text structure

Common patterns include cause and effect, problem and solution, comparison and classification. Write a brief mental label for each paragraph so you can relocate evidence efficiently.

Reference and vocabulary

Determine what pronouns and demonstratives refer to. For an unfamiliar word, test a plain-language replacement in the sentence; a dictionary meaning that breaks the local argument is unsuitable.

Evidence boundaries

Distinguish an observed result from an explanation proposed for it. May suggests possibility; demonstrates carries stronger support. Preserve these differences in answer choices.

Step-by-Step Approach

Step Action and purpose
1 Read for the topic and the writer’s central explanation.
2 Track contrast markers, causal claims and the role of examples.
3 Return to the relevant sentence and surrounding context for each question.
4 Eliminate answers with unsupported scope, reversed relationships or incorrect references.

Worked Examples

These are original teaching examples, not official ETS questions. Suggested practice timings are study targets, not extra test time.

Example 1

Passage: Some desert plants open their stomata at night. This allows gas exchange when temperatures are lower and water loss is reduced. Why does the passage mention lower temperatures?

Explanation / model: They explain the benefit of nighttime gas exchange: reducing water loss. The passage does not claim that all desert plants use the same mechanism or that nighttime eliminates water loss.

Example 2

Passage: Early maps showed only major rivers. Later surveys added seasonal streams, revealing a more complex drainage network. What changed?

Explanation / model: The detail represented by the maps increased. The passage describes improved mapping, not proof that new streams formed between surveys.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Mistake Why it fails Correction
Matching repeated words A distractor may repeat words but alter meaning. Check the entire claim.
Treating examples as the main idea An example supports a broader explanation. Ask what the example illustrates.
Ignoring qualifiers Some and all have different scope. Preserve the author’s degree of certainty.

Practice Routine

Read one short science or history text and summarize each paragraph in eight words or fewer. Write one detail question, one vocabulary question and one inference question with evidence locations. Review why each wrong answer adds, reverses or exaggerates information. Then repeat with a timer and shorter notes.

Quick Reference

Check Reminder
