What Is Summarize Spoken Text?

You listen to a lecture (60–90 seconds) and then have 10 minutes to write a summary of 50–70 words. Though it appears in the Listening section of the test, it draws heavily on academic writing and vocabulary skills.

  • Content (up to 2 points) — accurate representation of the key point and 1–2 supporting ideas
  • Form (up to 2 points) — length between 50–70 words; written as a paragraph (not bullet points)
  • Grammar (up to 2 points) — correct sentence structures
  • Vocabulary (up to 2 points) — appropriate and accurate word choices

Recommended Structure

Sentence 1: Topic + main argument
Sentence 2: Key supporting detail or example
Sentence 3: Second detail or implication / conclusion

  • Aim for exactly 55–65 words. Under 50 or over 70 risks a zero on Form.
  • Write in full sentences — no bullet points, no headings.
  • Paraphrase in your own words; avoid copying phrases verbatim from the audio.
