What Is Describe Image?

You are shown an image — a graph, chart, table, map, process diagram, or photograph — and must describe it in detail. You have 25 seconds to prepare and 40 seconds to respond.

Scoring Criteria

Scored on Content, Oral Fluency, and Pronunciation. Content is key: cover the main idea, key data points, and any trend or comparison.

Universal Response Template

Use this structure regardless of image type:

  1. Introduction (1 sentence): “The [chart/graph/diagram] shows/illustrates [topic].”
  2. Main feature (1–2 sentences): The most prominent trend, value, or comparison.
  3. Supporting detail (1–2 sentences): A second data point, an exception, or a contrast.
  4. Conclusion (1 sentence): “Overall, it is clear that…” or “In summary, [main finding].”

Image-Specific Tips

  • Line/Bar Charts: Describe the trend (rising, falling, fluctuating), peak, and lowest point. Use numbers.
  • Pie Charts: Mention the largest and smallest segments with percentages.
  • Tables: Identify the highest and lowest values; note any obvious pattern.
  • Process Diagrams: Describe the steps sequentially: “First… then… finally…”
  • Maps: Describe location, changes over time, or key features.
  • Photographs: Describe what you see — people, setting, action, atmosphere.

During Preparation (25 seconds)

  • Write down 3–4 key words or numbers to guide your response.
  • Decide your opening sentence immediately.
