What Is Highlight Incorrect Words?

You see a transcript of the audio on screen. As you listen, you must click on every word in the transcript that differs from what the speaker actually says. Words are substituted (a different word), not omitted or added.

Scoring

Contributes to Listening and Reading. Each correctly identified word = +1 point; each incorrectly clicked word = −1 point (minimum 0).

Strategy

  • Follow the transcript word by word as the audio plays — do not skip ahead or fall behind.
  • When you hear a mismatch, click immediately. The audio does not pause.
  • Keep your place in the transcript with your cursor.
  • Only click words you are certain are different. Incorrect clicks cost you points.
  • Focus on content words — substituted words are almost always nouns, verbs, adjectives, or adverbs. Function words (the, a, of) are rarely changed.

Common Error Patterns

  • Synonyms used in the audio where the transcript has the original word.
  • Numbers changed (e.g., “thirty” in transcript, “thirteen” in audio).
  • Antonyms or near-opposites (e.g., “increased” vs “decreased”).
