What Is Summarize Spoken Text?
You listen to a lecture (60–90 seconds) and write a summary of 50–70 words within 10 minutes. This is placed in the Listening section but tests writing, vocabulary, and grammar as well.
Scoring
Contributes to both Listening and Writing. Maximum 10 points per item.
- Content (2 pts) — main point + 1 key support accurately captured
- Form (2 pts) — 50–70 words, written as prose (no bullet points)
- Grammar (2 pts) — correct structures throughout
- Vocabulary (2 pts) — appropriate word choice
- Spelling (2 pts) — all words correctly spelled
During the Audio — Note-Taking
- Write the topic immediately.
- Note the main argument in keywords.
- Mark 1–2 supporting points — examples, causes, or effects.
- Note any concluding remark or implication.
Writing the Summary
Use 3 sentences following this pattern:
S1: “The lecture discusses [topic] and argues that [main claim].”
S2: “The speaker explains that [supporting detail 1], noting that [supporting detail 2].”
S3: “In conclusion, [implication or overall takeaway].”
