ONE TOPIC. A LITTLE MORE CONFIDENCE.
Listen and Choose a Response
What Is Listen and Choose a Response?
Listen to a short spoken question or statement and select the response that best fits the exchange. Meaning includes the speaker’s intention, not just the literal words.
| Detail | Study reference |
|---|---|
| Exam | TOEFL iBT (2026 format) |
| Response | Choose the most suitable response |
| Timing | Listening section timer and audio sequence |
| Primary skill | Intent, question type and conversational appropriateness |
How It Is Scored
Choose the contextually appropriate response. An option may repeat a word from the audio yet fail to answer the request, question or implied concern. Review practice errors by communicative function.
Official Video
Watch the official TOEFL explanation of the updated Listening section, then apply it to this task using the notes below. This video covers the section as a whole.
Technical Foundations
Speech acts
A statement can function as a request: It is cold in here may invite someone to close a window. Recognize offers, apologies, suggestions, refusals and requests for clarification.
Question form
Where requires location, when requires time and how long requires duration. Negative questions and indirect requests need special attention because a literal yes or no may be unclear without the rest of the response.
Natural adjacency pairs
An apology is normally followed by acknowledgement; an invitation by acceptance, refusal or a relevant question. Eliminate options that belong to a different conversational sequence.
Step-by-Step Approach
| Step | Action and purpose |
|---|---|
| 1 | Listen for the final question or main communicative intention. |
| 2 | Identify what kind of response would move the exchange forward. |
| 3 | Compare the options by meaning and appropriateness, not repeated sounds. |
| 4 | Choose the response that addresses the speaker directly without adding an unrelated assumption. |
Worked Examples
These are original teaching examples, not official ETS questions. Suggested practice timings are study targets, not extra test time.
Example 1
Audio script for a partner to read: Could you tell me where the registration desk is? Options: A It opens at nine. B Just past the stairs. C I registered yesterday.
Explanation / model: B answers the location request. A answers when and C refers to personal history; both are related to registration but do not answer the actual question.
Example 2
Audio script: I cannot carry all these books by myself. Options: A I can take a few for you. B The library closes soon. C I prefer novels.
Explanation / model: A responds to an implied need for help. The speaker does not explicitly ask for assistance, but the context makes an offer appropriate.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
| Mistake | Why it fails | Correction |
|---|---|---|
| Following sound overlap | Repeated words can distract from intent. | Identify the question type first. |
| Taking an indirect request literally | A statement may invite action. | Ask what the speaker wants next. |
| Replaying the item mentally too long | This reduces attention to later audio. | Commit and reset your attention. |
Practice Routine
Ask a partner or a text-to-speech tool to read 15 short requests once each. Respond aloud before seeing any choices. Label the speech act and the required response type, then compare with the intended meaning. Include polite refusals, indirect requests and clarification questions to broaden the practice.
